Consultation: Stenbider quota to be lowered

The quota for stonefish is to be reduced by 15 percent, according to a consultation proposal from the Greenlandic Government.

The fishing for female stonefish did not go well last year, when it was not possible to catch the entire quota. This year the quota will be reduced significantly.

In 2025, the stonefish quota was 1,475.3 tons, and in 2026 it will be reduced to 1,238 tons, which is 217 tons more than what the advisory committee has proposed.

The question is whether the smaller quota for West Greenland will have an impact on the fishery, as in 2025 only 1,098 tons of stonefish females were caught, even though the quota was much larger.

Free fishing on the east coast

The stonefish quota is set once a year, and it is stated that fishing for stonefish on the east coast is free.

- This is to provide an opportunity to develop the stonefish fishery in East Greenland, it is stated.

The consultation material, which clarifies what the individual areas have been allocated, can be viewed via this link.

The consultation deadline is set for 2 March, and it is emphasized that "no response shall be deemed acceptance of the submitted proposals".
