Statistics Greenland continuously monitors the costs of building homes in a so-called construction cost index.

In a recent publication, the Statistics Greenland office stated that the annual change in the construction cost index calculated as of January 1, 2026 was 3.5 percent for total homes.

Statistics Greenland explains that the increase was particularly driven by freight costs, which increased by 6.0 percent over the past year, while material costs increased by 3.2 percent and labor costs by 2.9 percent.

In the second half of the year, freight costs contributed even more to pushing up the index:

- The half-year increase from July 2025 to January 2026 was 1.5 percent for total housing, and freight costs contributed significantly to this increase by 8.0 percent in the half-year, writes Statistics Greenland.

Statistics Greenland states that the index was previously based exclusively on figures from apartment buildings, but from the first half of 2026 the index will be published in a new format as a combined index for total housing, which weighs a single-family house index (35 percent) and an apartment building index (65 percent).

A table with the main figures from the index can be seen below.
