A violent case from Qaqortoq has now concluded on Thursday morning, when the verdict was read out in Nuuk. The court found it proven that a 24-year-old man had committed attempted murder, rape by intercourse other than sexual intercourse, and attempted rape by intercourse.

The measure became a sentence for consideration. The 24-year-old has been in the forensic psychiatric unit in Aarhus R3 since July 2025, which specializes in treating people with a Greenlandic background.

The incidents in question took place on the morning of April 17, 2025. According to the indictment, the man attacked the woman with a knife and strangled her. He allegedly asked, “Do you want to die quietly or die in pain?”

The man pleaded not guilty. He said he didn't remember anything from that morning, as he had been very drunk and had blacked out.

Several witnesses testified on Wednesday. The injured woman's testimony was held behind closed doors and was clearly found credible by the jury. In addition, there was technical evidence that pointed to the man's guilt, the court concluded.

The court chose a more lenient solution.

Prosecutor Line Pedersen presented several statements about the man's severe mental problems. According to the documentation, he is considered schizophrenic and has delusions. He believes he is endowed with special abilities and communicates with good and evil spirits, among other things.

The prosecutor had therefore sought a sentence of commitment to a psychiatric hospital. However, the court found that he should receive a treatment sentence.

This is a relatively less intrusive measure because the man can thereby obtain certain rights without having to appear before a judge again. However, the sentence will still entail continued residence in Denmark for psychiatric treatment without a maximum period.

In its choice of measure, the court has taken into account that the man has not previously committed similar crimes, the circuit judge said when reading the verdict.

The 24-year-old man must also pay 120,000 in restitution to his victim.

The convicted man received the verdict. The prosecutor took time to reflect and thus has 14 days to decide whether the case should proceed to the Greenland High Court.
