An agreement was signed on Monday to initiate increased Danish aid to Greenland.
The agreement allocates several million to treat Greenlandic patients in the Danish healthcare system.
And then, preliminary studies will be initiated for large construction projects such as a deep-water port in Qaqortoq and a new runway for aircraft in Ittoqqortoormiit.
This is stated in a partial agreement that the Danish Minister of Finance, Nicolai Wammen (S), and the Greenlandic Minister of Finance and Taxes, Múte B. Egede, signed on Monday.
- The partial agreement reflects our shared desire to strengthen Greenland's healthcare system and invest in the infrastructure that better connects Greenland, says Nicolai Wammen in a press release.
The signing is a continuation of a framework agreement that Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen entered into with the Greenlandic Head of Government, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, in September.
Agreement adjustment
Here, the parties agreed on a package totaling 1.6 billion kroner, which will be used to increase Danish support for the Greenlandic healthcare system - including by paying the full price for Greenlandic patients treated in Danish hospitals.
In addition, there is the construction of the deep-water port and runway, which, according to the Prime Minister, will strengthen the resilience of Greenlandic society.
Monday's signature between the finance ministers allocates an additional 185 million kroner to the total amount contained in the framework agreement of 1.6 billion kroner.
This is therefore an upward adjustment.
- With the partial agreement, we are taking an important step in the implementation of the framework agreement and at the same time strengthening both the healthcare services for Greenlandic patients and the basis for future investments in Greenland's infrastructure, says Múte B. Egede in a press release.
He continues to express his joy at the Danish cooperation.
- The agreement reflects a constructive collaboration with the Danish government, which we look forward to continuing in the further implementation.
