The US president continues his harsh rhetoric about Greenland ahead of today's meeting between the US, Greenland and Denmark in Washington.
On Wednesday, Donald Trump posted on his social media account Truth Social, where he reiterated that the United States needs Greenland for national security reasons.
In addition, he adds that Greenland is important for the project to establish the missile shield called Golden Dome, and that NATO should help the US take over Greenland:
- It is crucial for the Golden Dom that we are building. NATO should pave the way for us to get it (Greenland, ed.).
"If we don't, Russia or China will, and it won't happen," the president wrote.
Trump: NATO is not effective without the US
The announcement from the president comes the day after the chairman of the Greenlandic Parliament Jens-Frederik Nielsen (D) stated with seven-inch nails that Greenland in no way wants to become part of the United States.
But there is still no sign that the president acknowledges the message.
In his post, Donald Trump continues by writing that NATO is not effective in terms of strength or deterrence without the United States:
- They know that, and so do I. NATO will become far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the United States. Anything less than that is unacceptable, says the president.
On Tuesday evening, Trump was questioned about statements from Jens-Frederik Nielsen that Greenland does not want to be part of the United States.
To this, Trump replied that he disagreed, and that he did not know who Jens-Frederik Nielsen was.
Today at 1:30 p.m. Greenlandic time, Greenland's Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Motzfeldt and Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen will meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance.
