Aleqa on Vivian's exit from Siumut: We take note of it

Vivian Motzfeldt today sharply criticized the leadership of her former party and the decision to leave the coalition when she resigned from Siumut. Now party chair Aleqa Hammond is responding to the criticism.

– Previously, when Siumut had a different chairman – and I myself have replaced her as chairman – the branches were not involved. Now the local branches are satisfied because they are being involved, Aleqa Hammond responds to the criticism, among other things.

Siumut first left the coalition on Friday, and Vivian Motzfeldt thus resigned as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Four days after her resignation as Minister of Foreign Affairs, she announced today, Tuesday, that she is resigning from the party of which she has been a member since the beginning of her political career.

Vivian Motzfeldt's decision to leave the party is taken note of by the chairman of Siumut.

– We respect her personal decision. Of course, we are sorry that it had to come to that. We can only take note of her decision, as she does not agree with the majority of the decisions of the board and local branches, nor with the method used. We wish her all the best in her future work, says Aleqa Hammond.

– Everyone knew that we were going to leave the government

Upon her resignation from Siumut, Vivian Motzfeldt today sharply criticized the party in Sermitsiaq.

– Siumut has decided that my work is unnecessary, and Siumut has also decided that Siumut does not need to have the chairmanship of Inatsisartut. This has been done without involving the relevant people in these matters and without consulting us, who are working on it, says Vivian Motzfeldt to Sermitsiaq.

We will forward her criticism to the chairman of Siumut.

What do you say to the criticism?

– Everyone knows our reasons, and everyone also knew that we had to withdraw from the coalition. I will not try to discuss who did what after the decision. We can only take note of her decision, says Aleqa Hammond.

Couldn't you have involved the elected officials in such a decision?

– Previously, when Siumut had a different chairman – and I myself replaced her as chairman – the departments were not involved. Now the local departments are satisfied because they are being involved. My way of leading is different from hers, and therefore it is unfamiliar to her. We can also understand that. In Siumut, it has been a big assessment matter whether we should be in the coalition just to keep individual people's positions, says Aleqa Hammond.

Vivian Motzfeldt participated as Naalakkersuisoq for Foreign Affairs in a historic meeting in Washington together with the Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen.

Siumut does not exclude herself

Among other things, Vivian Motzfeldt criticized that Siumut excluded herself from being able to influence decisions after the party left the coalition and that she could not participate in the process.

Siumut denies that the party is excluding itself by leaving the coalition.

If you think about the country's position, you could have influence, but by leaving now, aren't you excluding yourself?

– Our country never excludes itself politically. Politics is not about individuals, but about the different parties, and it is about having a common voice abroad. Siumut can always be counted in foreign policy, says Aleqa Hammond.

Aleqa Hammond was re-elected as chairman of Siumut last summer with 23 votes, while Vivian Motzfeldt received 19 and lost the chairmanship election.

Several disagree – but the party stands united

After Vivian Motzfeldt resigned from Siumut, the arch-Siumut leader Kim Kielsen also announced that he was leaving the party after 41 years. This means that Siumut's members in Inatsisartut have been halved from four to two.

However, the party stands united, the chairwoman emphasizes when she was interviewed just before Kim Kielsen announced that he had also left the party.

– It is not that Siumut is not united because of one person's decision. I would like to remind you that it is the entire Siumut board and all local branches, except two, that are behind the decision, concludes Aleqa Hammond.
