The list of senators and congressmen from the United States who will visit Denmark at the end of this week is now finally in place.
This is confirmed by member of the Danish Parliament for Inuit Ataqatigiit Aaja Chemnitz, who was responsible for planning the visit.
Cross-party delegation
The delegation will be led by Alaska Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski.
In addition to Lisa Murkowski, Senators Chris Coon (Democrat), Thom Tillis (Republican), Dick Durbin (Democrat), Jeanne Shaheen (Democrat), and Congressmen Gregory Meeks, Madeline Dean, and Sara Jacobs will participate.
Participation from Inatsisartut Committee
The delegation is scheduled to participate in a Greenland Committee meeting on Friday or Saturday, where members of the Foreign Policy Committee and members of Inatsisartut's Foreign and Security Policy Committee are also invited to participate.
– I would like the delegation to come to Nuuk as well, but we are also working on getting the members of the Foreign and Security Policy Committee in Inatsisartut to come to Denmark and physically participate in the meeting, says Aaja Chemnitz.
Good friend of Greenland
Senator Lisa Murkowski was in Nuuk recently, where she also met with business people and politicians.
– She is a good friend of Greenland, and also a personal friend of mine. That is why I also have high hopes that it is precisely she who will lead the delegation. Because it is absolutely crucial that it is someone who knows about the Arctic who meets with us, says Aaja Chemnitz, who is in full swing with the actual planning of the meeting.
Support for Greenland's sovereignty
According to a statement from Republican Senator Thom Tillis, the meeting is about showing support for Greenland's sovereignty.
Senior researcher at DIIS, Ulrik Pram Gad, tells Sermitsiaq that "in addition to the precise composition of the delegation - and especially that there is actually republican participation - the most important thing to note is perhaps the importance of parliamentarians being persistent in their international work: Without Aaja Chemnitz's long-term contact with Lisa Murkowski, this would hardly have come to fruition."
