Americans skeptical of Trump's Greenland plans: - To me, this is embarrassing

Sermitsiaq has been in Washington in connection with the high-profile meeting between Greenland, Denmark and the USA, and on that occasion we have asked Americans what they say about Donald Trump's ambition to take over Greenland.

Arriving in Washington D.C., Sermitsiaq's envoy spoke with a number of random Americans about their thoughts on the startling statements their president has made about Greenland.

What those interviewed have in common is that they are extremely skeptical of their president's actions when it comes to Greenland.

- Rabble of a madman

Question: Trump has repeatedly said that he wants to take over Greenland, what do you think?

"I think it's crazy. I'm curious about what the real motivation is," says 31-year-old Elisabeth Morris.

Eugene Nandwa goes on to say that it sounds like the ravings of a madman:

- There doesn't seem to be any benefit to it, so even if it's supposed to be a "strategic move", it seems more like the rants of a madman to be honest, says Eugene Nandwa.

Question: He says it's about safety - what do you think about that?

"I don't understand what threat Greenland could be to us, so I don't know. It's very confusing," says Elisabeth Morris.

Question: Has there been any focus on Trump's desire to persuade Greenland in the media?

- Yes, there's been a lot of talk about it, but people seem very confused about it. I think most people think it's stupid.

"We have so many problems in the United States, so I don't know why we spend so much time and energy on this," says Elisabeth Morris.

Bobby Vanderhoof: - It's a diversionary maneuver

Question: What do you think about Trump's desire to take over Greenland?

"I don't think it's a real desire. I think it's a maneuver he's using to distract people from what he's really trying to achieve elsewhere," said 64-year-old Bobby Vanderhoof.

Question: What do you think he wants to divert attention from?

- There's a whole list of things he does that if the world looked at it, it would be devastating. So if you get the world to look somewhere else, it's easier for him to continue with other things. It doesn't matter if what he does is right or wrong. The main point is that he gets people to look the other way. He's successful at that.

Bobby Vanderhoof, 64, Technology Consultant

"It's important to tell your country. This is not reality, this is a diversion," says Bobby Vanderhoof.

Question: What do you personally think about the desire to take over Greenland?

- I don't think this is something we should be involved in. We should let the European countries govern themselves.

"What's happening in the world right now is that there are a lot of moving parts and a lot of statements being thrown out to distract. Be vigilant, but don't panic and live your lives," says Bobby Vanderhoof.

George Tabora: - For me it's embarrassing

On another bench we meet 64-year-old George Tabora, now retired but previously employed by the US Department of Defense.

He calls Trump's wish crazy:

"I think it's crazy to talk to a NATO ally like that. An ally that has helped us over the years and is now being treated like an enemy," he says, continuing:

- I have worked for the military as a civilian, and my father was in the navy for 30 years, and we have always had great respect for other nations that have helped us in times of war. Denmark has always stood by our side.

George Tabora, 64, Retired (Former Department of Defence)

Question: Why do you think it's a crazy wish?

- Because Trump just says, almost like a king, that we are going to take your country. So someone has to say something. A country, and especially the USA, simply cannot do that.

- I have always thought that we are a country that others look up to for defending democracy and freedom, so for me this is embarrassing.

Question: Have you heard about the meeting between the parties here in Washington?

- Yes, and I think it's really good that there's now a meeting to bring the temperature down a bit.

Do you think the meeting can calm things down a bit?

- Yes, I think so. I think it's important to bring in some other important players, like Marco Rubio and Vance. That's as high as you can go without Trump getting involved.

"I hope we can find solutions to things. We should respect other countries. Not just take them over," says George Tabora.
