The number of people with Danish citizenship in Greenland continues to decline for the sixth year in a row.

Where back in 2021 there were 55,075 Danish citizens, that number has fallen to 53,911 at the beginning of 2026 - that is 1,164 people fewer. Last year, the decline in Danish citizens was 101 people.

This is evident from Statistics Greenland's latest statement on the size and composition of the population as of January 1, 2026.

It is especially people from Asia (2,048 people), but also Africa (41), the Nordic countries (281) and America (117), who ensure the country's growth.

People born in Greenland

The number of people born in Greenland continues to decline – although significantly less than the year before.

In 2025, 836 Greenland-born people immigrated, while the number of emigrants was 1,046. Net emigration thus amounted to 210 people compared to 449 in 2024.

Nuuk continues to attract the most new citizens. In 2025, there was a growth of 395 people in the capital, which now has 35.8 percent of the total population living.

A preliminary calculation shows that the number of births is still very low. Yes, the lowest since World War II, but at the same level as the year before, which is 684 births.
