Accommodation tax comes into effect
A new accommodation tax has come into effect as of January 1. The Danish Tax Agency announced this on its Facebook page.
Accommodation tax comes into effect
This means that from this year you will have to charge a tax of 30kr. per night from foreign guests if you rent out accommodation or rooms via e.g. Airbnb, Booking.com, etc. This also means that it now requires CVR registration to rent out via the above.
The tax does not apply to persons residing in Greenland or private rentals without payment.
Disability and social issues in focus
The disability and social area will be significantly improved this year in Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq. The municipality writes on its website. There is an increasing need for support, especially in Nuuk, where more socially disadvantaged people are moving, and the municipality will now initiate a thorough analysis of the area in order to achieve a more coherent and effective effort. The analysis will uncover how tasks are solved today, identify cooperation challenges and point to good solutions - including possible reorganization. In addition, a new disability policy will be prepared, and the One Door scheme will be evaluated with a view to improvements. Emphasis will also be placed on better cooperation around children and young people, so that early signs of discomfort are discovered and handled more quickly. The aim is to shorten the process, greater clarity in responsibility and improved support for citizens.
Committee on orientation trip
The Fisheries, Hunting and Agriculture Committee conducted an orientation trip to Norway and Denmark last month. The purpose was to gather knowledge and inspiration about the fisheries sector by meeting researchers, industry organizations and authorities. During the visit, the committee compared education systems and management models and assessed opportunities for production and marketing of Greenlandic fishery products.
European support
Several European countries and institutions publicly stood with Greenland and Denmark in the wake of the latest controversy with the United States. Ritzau writes. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasizes that Greenland's future must be determined by Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark, and he expresses support for Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The European Commission says it will continue to stand in solidarity and uphold the principles of sovereignty and the inviolability of borders. Germany and France also support it and emphasize that borders must not be changed by force.
Over two million kroner distributed
The Greenlandic Government has announced that last year 2.19 million kroner was awarded in project funds and fishing equipment to a total of 39 fishermen in both East and South Greenland. The funds are financed by Inatsisartut and have been used, among other things, for a fishing seminar in Tasiilaq, motor training courses, information campaigns and equipment such as auto reels, longlines and fishing pots.
16.5 million for Aasivissuit – Nipisat
Three Danish foundations – the Augustinus Foundation, the Aage V. Jensen Foundation and the 15. Juni Foundation – have granted a total of 16.5 million kroner for the next phase of the dissemination work for the UNESCO World Heritage Site Aasivissuit – Nipisat in Qeqqata Municipality. The municipality reports this on its website.
The support makes it possible to continue the work of making the World Heritage more accessible and understandable, especially for children, young people and local communities, and includes projects such as stories about life from coast to inland, hunting, nature and culture, and the establishment of facilities in the countryside.
Population development for 2024
In 2024, the population of Greenland fell by 157 people, from 56,699 to 56,542, according to Statistics Greenland. The decline was due, among other things, to more deaths than births and net emigration – a continuing trend in demographics.
Great expectations for 2026 for literature
After an active 2025 with a 50th anniversary festival in Sisimiut, children's workshops and international success in Paris and Frankfurt, the Greenland Authors' Association (KA) is looking forward to an even more exciting 2026. The highlight will be participation as a guest of honor at the Czech Republic's Authors Reading Month in July, where 31 Greenlandic authors and cultural actors will present literature and culture in Brno, Ostrava, Kosice and Bratislava. A three-day "book industry forum" for publishers and translators will also be held. In April, the second international festival for small-language Arctic and Nordic authors will be organized in Karasjok, Northern Norway, in collaboration with the Sami Authors' Association (SGS).
