Since 2020, Tusass has worked purposefully to strengthen the digital competencies of children and young people through the Coding Class initiative. The project is being rolled out in close collaboration with the country's municipalities, and so far, 153 courses have been conducted across the country.
The core of Coding Class is creative coding, where students learn through practical experience. The aim is to give young people concrete skills that go far beyond the screen, so that they are able to translate technical knowledge into solutions to real-world problems.
To ensure the project's local anchoring, 28 teachers have been trained to provide the teaching, which makes it possible for the schools themselves to drive the digital development further in their daily lives.
Coding in Atuarfik Kilaaseeraq - Maniitsoq
Most recently, Tusass visited Atuarfik Kilaaseeraq in Maniitsoq in weeks 10 and 11 to teach the city's 8th graders. The effort is generating enthusiasm here; a local teacher at the school describes the course as both extremely exciting and educational for the students. Tusass reports this in a press release.
- Coding Class the teaching has been exciting and educational for most students, who already had knowledge of the use of iPad and Gaming from their own everyday life at school. The Coding Class instructor had prepared perfectly for the lesson and was very welcoming to all of us, says Helene Heilmann, a teacher in Atuarfik Kilaaseeraq.
Arctic Circle Business builds bridges between school and business
In parallel with the lessons at the school in Maniitsoq, Tusass and Arctic Circle Business entered into a strategic partnership. The purpose of the partnership was to make the lessons even more realistic by presenting the students with a real-life case that they had to solve through Coding Class.
- For us, it has been important to hear the voices of the young people. Through Coding Class, we have gained insight into their ideas and solutions to real-life problems, and it has been inspiring to see their commitment. At the same time, it is important for Arctic Circle Business to build bridges between school and business so that students get a better insight into local educational and job opportunities, says CEO of Arctic Circle Business, Naasunnguaq Beck Kristensen.
Coding Class aims to inspire children for their future education
The students gained practical experience as they learned to program and develop their own games. As part of the initiative, member companies of Arctic Circle Business presented their daily work and career paths – with a clear ambition to pave the way for the young people's future educational choices.
The process culminated in a project fair, where the students presented their completed games and solutions in small stalls. Here they had the opportunity to pitch their results directly to the participating companies, which underlined the link between school and the real business world.
- It has been fantastic to experience how the students took on the challenge and worked on their solutions during their Coding Class course. The collaboration with the school and Arctic Circle Business worked really well and has given the students the opportunity to work with real-life problems from the local business world, says Nivi Thomassen Olsen, learning consultant and Coding Class teacher.
