A group of citizens in Nuuk are organizing a demonstration against what they describe as the United States' illegal and unacceptable plans to take over Greenland on Saturday, January 17, 2026. The demonstration will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and is announced as a peaceful protest.

The demonstration will start at Katerittarfik Amisut and move through the city, ending at Kujallerpaat, where the US Consulate in Nuuk is located. The route is very similar to the last demonstration on the same topic, which took place in March 2025.

According to the organizers, the purpose is to send a clear message that Greenland's democracy, right to self-determination and basic human rights must be respected.

One of the organizers, Bikki Jepsen, says that the Greenlandic population has been exposed to pressure for a long time that creates insecurity and fear.

– Our politicians and elected officials have repeatedly stated that our country is not for sale - and that our country cannot simply be bought or taken over by the use of military force, she says.

Citizens support politicians

The organizers emphasize that the demonstration is not just a protest, but also a demonstration of support for Greenland's political and diplomatic line. Kristian Johansen, who is also among the organizers, also encourages citizens in other cities and settlements to organize similar demonstrations on the same day.

– With this demonstration we want to show that we are taking action, that we stand together, and that we support our politicians, diplomats and partners. Therefore, we also encourage citizens in other cities and towns to arrange demonstrations on the same day and show that our country stands together, he says.

According to the organizers, the demonstration is not only about Greenland, but about respect for international law and international law, Avijâja Rosing-Olsen points out.

– We demand respect for our country's right to self-determination and for us as a population. We demand respect for international law and international law. This is not just our fight – it is a fight that concerns the whole world, she says.

The organizers are calling on artists, cultural figures, politicians and citizens to participate in the demonstration and use their voice, including by sharing photos and videos from the day. At the same time, it is emphasized that the demonstration must be peaceful.

Racism, violence and vandalism are not accepted, and participants are encouraged to show unity, bring Greenlandic flags and treat each other with respect.
