Emergency plan in the south: From work camp to youth hostel

When the airport in Qaqortoq opens in April, the plan is to convert the camp that the airport workers have been using as housing into temporary civilian accommodation with 60 beds. The site will then be developed into a youth hostel over 12 months.

This work camp will be developed into a youth hostel near the airport in Qaqortoq over the next year.

With a new and large airport in Qaqortoq, there is an urgent need for accommodation in the area that can handle cancelled passengers, crew, technicians and other guests. The company 60° North Greenland would like to resolve this need and has submitted a project and land application to Kujalleq Municipality.

60° North Greenland has purchased Pennacon's former staff housing and work camp near the new airport and has listed the following about the project to the administration and politicians in the southern municipality:

The future youth hostel is located on a side road to the airport road.

This is an urgent matter. Thus, the land application from 60° North Greenland was only sent to the southern municipality in November 2025, but politically the obvious win-win case has already been considered by the committee for technology and the environment, the finance committee and the municipal council. And the administration has proposed that a municipal plan amendment be made for the area, "so that the application for upgrading to youth hostel/hostel standard can be considered on the basis of the new municipal plan amendment".

The camp has been used by Pennecon and KJ-Greenland, who have helped build the new airport for Greenland Airports Construction. When the airport was ready, the area was supposed to be closed down and returned to the municipality in a cleaned-up condition.

Project in two phases

60° North Greenland has divided the new project into two phases:

In phase 1 – now and here – some technical measures will be implemented in relation to electricity, water, wastewater, fire improvements in the form of escape routes/warnings, covered walkways and other minor adaptations.

Phase 2 will then begin, where the site will be developed into a hostel with the following improvements:

Location

The camp is located as a shortcut from the airport road in scenic surroundings. Between and up lakes and sheltered between the mountains. The project description states that there is a unique view of the lakes. To the west there is an opening in the mountains, where the road to Qaqortoq is located, which gives the site the opportunity for evening sun. However, it is also noted that in winter there can be large amounts of snow.

A busy business

60° North Greenland ApS, the initiators of the exciting project, is a company that has developed in several directions over the past few years. It assists mining companies and carries out construction work. It also owns hotel apartments and a hotel ship, which can be offered to tourists.

This is how the accommodation units are arranged.

The latest accounts that 60° North Greenland ApS has submitted to the Danish Commerce and Companies Agency show that the owners Rasmus Christian Rasmussen and Malik Vahl Rasmussen are successful in running the company. From 2023, the annual profit was increased from just under 1.8 million DKK to 9.3 million DKK in 2024. The equity is just over 23 million DKK. Back in 2024, the company had an average of 28 employees.
