Faroese and Greenlandic students on vocational education will now be able to stay at their school dormitories during holidays and public holidays. This is stated by the Ministry of Children and Education in a press release.

Students with a long way to go to vocational education already have the opportunity to stay at a school dormitory, most of which also offer accommodation during the weekend.

This will now apply to all holidays and public holidays, except for the summer holidays. The intention of the initiative is to provide more flexibility for students from the rest of the Kingdom.

- Students from the Faroe Islands and Greenland will not have to spend time and money traveling home or finding other places to stay during holidays and public holidays. I hope that the initiative means that in the future we will educate more skilled workers from the Faroe Islands and Greenland, says Minister of Children and Education Mattias Tesfaye (S).

Schools with students from the Faroe Islands and Greenland will be able to receive a subsidy to stay open during those days. It is a condition that they stay open on holidays and public holidays in order to receive the subsidy.

The initiative is part of an agreement between the government and a broad majority in the Folketinget from May 2025. 2.5 million kroner has been allocated annually for the scheme from 2026 onwards.

In addition to the financial subsidy of 2.5 million kroner, the possibility of being admitted to the country's school hostels has also been relaxed.

Students with three quarters of an hour's travel time can now be admitted, where previously they had to have at least five quarters of an hour's travel time to the education.

The Ministry of Children and Education also generally encourages Danish school dormitories to provide students with long travel times with the opportunity to stay overnight on weekends.

The request applies to all students in the dormitories and not just students from the Faroe Islands and Greenland.
