The 38-year-old Aka Hansen is now entering politics in earnest by announcing her candidacy for the upcoming parliamentary election, which must be held by the end of October at the latest.
Aka Hansen, who describes herself as an activist, is known for her focus on the rights of indigenous peoples and women, and her heart beats for Greenlandic independence.
Focus on injustices
She announces that she will focus on the “injustices that we still experience in the country today”.
- We have been through a lot in recent years. Here I am thinking of the spiral scandal, the legally fatherless and we have a draft of a constitution. Therefore, I think it is time that we bring the voice to the Parliament, which is about drawing attention to the developments we have been through and putting an end to the injustices we still experience in the country today. It is important for me to dare to say the things that allow us to move forward in the struggle for full independence, and I am ready to take on that task, states Aka Hansen.
The parliamentary candidate is known, among other things, for focusing on the stories of the legally fatherless through the TV program "Ataataqanngitsut" back in 2022. She has also helped organize demonstrations "to put an end to the Danish system's continued removal of Greenlandic children from Denmark on wrong grounds". Two key issues that she will fight for in the Parliament.
A big push into politics
She says that it has taken a “big push to fully enter politics”.
- I am a single mother of two children, and I am aware of how time-consuming politics is. But now my children are older, and therefore I can with a better conscience feel ready to give everything I have, says Aka Hansen, who in no way relates to the current situation with the USA in the press release.
In Denmark, there is strong speculation as to whether a general election is imminent, since the latest opinion polls have shown progress for the Social Democrats. In this way, the election campaign is already in full swing in Danish politics.
