2026 GENERAL ELECTION
Food checks should also come to Greenland
In this live blog you can follow the big and small details of the 2026 general election.

Food vouchers should also come to Greenland
Najaaraq Møller (S) believes that poor citizens in Greenland should be able to take part in the food vouchers that have been adopted in Denmark.
In Denmark, it was agreed shortly before the election to issue a food voucher to citizens with an income below a certain amount.
Najaaraq Møller believes that the scheme should be extended to Greenland:
- Some might say that Greenland itself must solve the problem through our own economy. And yes – we also have a responsibility for our own society. But when we talk about the realm, we must also be able to talk about shared responsibility.
- Denmark spends billions every year on international aid and support to many different countries around the world. Therefore, it should also be possible to discuss how citizens in Greenland can participate in schemes that already exist in Denmark, when the need is there, writes Najaaraq Møller in the press release.
For Najaaraq, it is not about shifting responsibility away from Greenland, but about ensuring that citizens in the realm should not be disadvantaged when it comes to food.
- If the realm is to make sense, it must also be felt in people's everyday lives, concludes Najaaraq Møller (S).

Danish party leader open to new model with an independent Greenland
Leader of the Radical Left, Martin Lidegaard, tells the Althing Arctic that he is open to dissolving the Commonwealth if necessary and replacing it with cooperation between Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands as independent nations.
The media has interviewed Lidegaard about the idea that the former long-time top diplomat Michael Zilmer-Johns presented back in 2023.
Here, Zilmer-Johns said, among other things, that he thought Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland should think about a different form of community, where the countries as three independent nations bind themselves together again, but on a voluntary basis and as an option, and not just because it is a historical legacy:
– We have a problem because the Commonwealth, as we know it, cannot accommodate the Greenlanders and Faroese's completely legitimate desires for independence and a more independent international role, Michael Zilmer-Johns told journalist Martin Breum in 2023.
According to Altinget Arktis, Martin Lidegaard is ready to discuss a new model for replacing the Commonwealth with or in a new government in Denmark.

Qarsoq Høegh-Dam is running for the general election
Naleraq announced on Friday morning in a brief statement that Qarsoq Høegh-Dam is running for the party in the upcoming general election:
- We can now officially announce that Qarsoq Høegh-Dam is running for the 2026 general election for Naleraq, the party writes.
Qarsoq Høegh-Dam is the party's 5th and final candidate for the 2026 parliamentary election.
With Qarsoq Høegh-Dam's nomination for the election, there is a possibility that one family member will replace another, as he is closely related to Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam, who has chosen not to run again.
Qarsoq Høegh-Dam has previously participated in the election campaign when he ran for the Inatsisartut election in 2021. Here he received a great election with the fourth most personal votes (796) with Siumut.
However, he chose to resign from his position as Inatsisartut member before the constituent assembly, after it emerged that he had a case of euphoric drugs in his bag.
Since then, Qarsoq Høegh-Dam has been politically active, among other things, as chairman of Siumut Nuuk. However, he resigned from Siumut back in 2024.

Nathanielsen responds again to Siumut criticism
The two members of Naalakkersuisut, Anna Wangenheim (D) and Naaja H. Nathanielsen (IA), are receiving harsh criticism from coalition partner Siumut for their candidacy in the general election.
In a post on Facebook, Naaja H. Nathanielsen responds:
- I am of course flattered that Siumut apparently believes that Anna and I are indispensable in Naalakkersuisut. I also think that we are doing quite well, says the politician.
She further writes that it is a democratic right to stand for election:
- In addition, we have a democratic right to stand for election and are not breaking any rules by campaigning for the next 14 days.
She believes that she can hold her position in Naalakkersuisut and campaign at the same time. She also believes that the broad coalition is a strength for the country, and she hopes Siumut will remain in the coalition:
- I think Vivian (Naalakkersuisoq for Foreign Affairs, ed.) is doing really well, and I think the cooperation is working well.
-
Kuupik V. Kleist wants to make a comeback in politics
Former chairman of Inuit Ataqatigiit and chairman of Naalakkersuisut, Kuupik V. Kleist, is running for parliament. He has stayed away from politics since 2015.
- The pressure from the US against our country is intense. I believe that Greenland is not for sale and cannot be bought. However, Greenland must be led by the people who live in the country, he justifies his candidacy.
Kuupik V. Kleist has worked for the creation of the Self-Government Act and was at the head of Greenland's first Naalakkersuisut after the introduction of the Self-Government Act in 2009.
In his justification for running for the election now, he says that the population must remember that the Americans do not think the same as their president.
- As a population, we now need to defend ourselves, unity and cooperation with others. I am ready to cooperate with all parties in the Folketing as I usually do. We can only achieve good results by cooperating with others, says Kuupik V. Kleist.
-
Siumut will look abroad for inspiration
Parliamentary candidate Ane Lone Bagger (S) would like to have knowledge from other countries with populations similar to Greenland's. This will provide an opportunity to improve health, she believes:
– Siumut will work in the Folketing to examine international models from countries with small and dispersed populations that can contribute to improving health examinations and treatment services in Greenland. The goal is to ensure earlier detection of diseases – especially lifestyle diseases and cancer – through the introduction of age-based health examinations.
Health must not become a question of where citizens live, Siumut emphasizes in her press release.
– In Greenland, the population lives dispersedly, and this creates special challenges for access to a well-equipped and specialized health service. Therefore, Siumut will strengthen efforts to ensure better and more equal health services for all citizens.
Ane Lone Bagger and Siumut will also work for better support for seriously ill patients. This means, among other things, that the Greenlandic Patient Home in Copenhagen should have a few more rooms and more Greenlandic food, the party says.
-
Lars Poulsen: I must reassess my support for the coalition
Siumut's Lars Poulsen questions Naalakkersuisut's commitment to their work after two members of Naalakkersuisut have chosen to run for the Folketing.
These are naalakkersuisoq for health and people with disabilities Anna Wangenheim (D) and naaakkersuisoq for, among other things, justice and raw materials Naaja H. Nathanielsen (IA).
- I am disappointed by the latest developments, and therefore I believe it is time for a reassessment, writes Lars Poulsen in a post on Facebook.
- I have been confident but am now disappointed, as some naalakkersuisut are already proclaiming that they are willing to leave their posts for a mandate in the Folketing - of course with their democratic right, says Lars Poulsen.
Lars Poulsen, who is a member of the Inatsisartut for Siumut, criticizes Naalakkersuisut's attitude towards the important responsibility and proclaims that he will listen to his supporters in relation to support for the coalition.
Since the coalition was formed less than a year ago, two Naalakkersuisut have quit. These are Maasi Pedersen, who was naalakkersuisut for children, youth and families, and Bentiaraq Ottosen, who was naalakkersuisut for labor market and environment.
Siumut is part of the coalition and also has a naalakkersuisut.
-
Another Naalakkersuisut is running for Parliament
Naaja H. Nathanielsen, IA, announced his candidacy for Parliament on Monday evening.
- I have now decided to give it a shot. If successful, I have, together with my chairman, Múte B. Egede, made a plan for how I will stop in Naalakkersuisut without the work that has been started being lost on the floor. If I do not get in, I will continue with my tasks in Naalakkersuisut with the same commitment, writes Naaja H. Nathanielsen in a short post.
She also states that she will seek leave from Inatsisartut if she is elected, as she does not support dual mandates.
In addition to Naaja H. Nathanielsen, IA has already presented four candidates for the Folketing. These are Pipaluk Lynge, Nivi Rosing, Kalistat Lund and Aqqalukkuluk Fontain.

Atassut invites to press conference
Atassut plans to hold a press conference on Friday, March 13 at 3:00 PM to present their candidates for the Folketing and to present their party program.
Atassut currently has Bentiaraq Ottosen, Orla Joelsen and Malu Ostermann as candidates for the Folketing. It is unknown whether the party will field more candidates for the election on March 24.

Anna W: I will continue to do my job as naalakkersuisoq
Anna Wangenheim is now responding to criticism about her candidacy for the Folketing. In a post on the social media Facebook, she writes that she will continue to do her job in the Department of Health and Disability:
- I continue to do my job. Nothing has changed. I carry out my tasks with the same commitment and in full accordance with the common goals of Naalakkersuisut, writes Anna Wangenheim.
The answer comes after the chairman of Atassut, Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen, has criticized her candidacy for the Folketing despite her holding a heavy position in Naalakkersuisut with great responsibility.
- I do not have another job on the side. Running an election campaign is neither a position nor a source of income. It is a democratic right that all citizens have and is protected by our democracy. This also applies to politicians who already hold elected office and are still running for election. I am running because I want to work for our country and our people, replies Anna Wangenheim.
She has already stated that she will resign as Naalakkersuisouq if she is elected to the Folketing.

Inatsisartut member among Naleraq's candidates
Juno Berthelsen, who has been a member of Inatsisartut for Naleraq since last time, is also running for the Folketing. Naleraq announced this on its Facebook. This makes Naleraq's fourth candidate for the Folketing presented.
- I believe that Denmark's desire for ownership of Greenland has grown in the past year. And I cannot just sit back while the work towards independence stagnates and is not being processed by other parties, Juno Berthelsen justifies her candidacy.
He is educated in social sciences and has several years of experience as a head of department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
-
Naleraq presents Oliver Bech as their candidate
- Our identity, culture and values must be respected. I am running for the Parliament to strengthen and work for these values.
This is what Naleraq candidate for the Parliament, Oliver Bech, says in a press release.
Naleraq has presented their newest and youngest candidate in their list of candidates for the Parliamentary elections on Saturday.
- Despite his young age, he already has solid experience in political work, having been deputy chairman of Siumut's local branch in Nuuk, writes Naleraq.
Oliver Bech has recently announced that he is leaving Siumut.
He has chosen to become a member of Naleraq for the party's work with Greenlandic values.
Naleraq will present their candidates during a press conference today at 1:30 p.m.

Aqqalu J. criticizes Anna W.'s candidacy for the Folketing
- Being a naalakkersuisoq is a responsibility that must be taken seriously.
This is how the chairman of Atassut, Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen, begins his announcement after Demokraatit has presented their candidates for the Folketing.
Among the candidates is Anna Wangenheim, who is naalakkersuisoq for health and disability.
Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen justifies his criticism of Anna Wangenheim's candidacy by saying that Atassut joined the coalition a year ago with the idea that the healthcare system should always be a priority.
And he has a clear message to the coalition:
- We do not support the actions that naalakkersuisoq – who is now running for the Folketing – has taken, he writes.
Anna Wangenheim has explained to Sermitsiaq that she will resign as naalakkersuisoq if she is elected to the Folketing. There are elections for the Folketing on March 24.
-
Wangenheim will resign from Naalakkersuisut if she is elected
Anna Wangenheim (D), who is the Minister for Health and People with Disabilities, will resign from her position if she succeeds in being elected to the Folketing.
She tells Sermitsiaq:
- Being the Minister for Health and People with Disabilities is a full-time job, so if I am elected, I will of course leave my position.
The health service is a sore point, as it suffers from a staff shortage and many short-term employees. According to Wangenheim, she is leaving her position with peace of mind:
- I will do so with peace of mind, because over the past year I have ensured that the health service is not completely in financial ruins.
- After all, we have done something about that in the coalition we are in and in cooperation with the Danish state, so I have peace of mind about it.
She says it is important for her to come to the Folketing and fight for the continuation of the agreements that have been made in the health sector with the Danish government. Here, the Danish government has promised to contribute around 200 million DKK annually.
- There is a lot at stake in our welfare sector right now, says Anna Wangenheim.
She also emphasizes that she does not want a double mandate, and that she is also leaving her post in Inatsisartut.
- I will not run for a double mandate. I will focus fully on what I am elected to do.
Anna Wangenheim received the third most personal votes in the 2022 parliamentary election.
-
Karina Zeeb is running for the Folketing
Lawyer Karina Zeeb, 38, is running for the Folketing for Naleraq. She believes that the political work in the Folketing should be more noticeable for Greenland and the Greenlanders.
- We must ensure that decisions about our country are not made over our heads. And I am ready to take that responsibility. I am ready to continue the good work that Naleraq in the Folketing has carried out in the just concluded election period, and I am ready to provide good results for the tasks that have not yet been initiated, says Karina Zeeb in a press release.
Karina Zeeb says she is ready to use her experience as a lawyer to ensure that Greenlanders' rights are followed and respected.
Naleraq will present all its candidates on Monday during a press conference at 1:30 p.m.

Demokraatit calls for press conference
So Demokraatit is also ready with the party's election program and candidates for the parliamentary election.
Demokraatit chairman Jens-Frederik Nielsen will hold a press conference at the party's office today at 4:00 p.m., where he will present the candidates and election program.
The party writes on Facebook.
The Democrats had a great election for the Inatsisartut and the local councils in 2025, so it will be exciting to see if the party can also secure a mandate in the Folketing, and not to mention who the party puts on the ballot.
At the last parliamentary election in 2022, the party nominated Anna Wangenheim and Justus Hansen. Wangenheim got a great election with 3,482 votes.
However, it must be described as doubtful whether Anna Wangenheim will again be a find on the ballot, as she holds the position of naalakkersuisoq for health and people with disabilities.

Naleraq presents its first candidate
Najannguaq Hegelund is running for the Folketing election for Naleraq. Naleraq reports in a press release.
Najannguaq Hegelund, 37, is running for Naleraq to fight for the rights of Greenlandic citizens in Denmark.
Through her association work over the past 8 years, Najannguaq Hegelund has seen how Greenlandic parents can be misunderstood in the Danish system. She will work in the Folketing, together with parties, to ensure that Greenlandic children are not forcibly removed from their parents unlawfully:
- My experience shows that in order to achieve results for Greenlanders, we must set clear demands, not give up and first and foremost put Greenlanders first instead of just blindly following Denmark, says Najannguaq Hegelund.
- I have repeatedly seen that Greenlanders are left alone. I want to emphasize strongly that everyone has legal certainty, this also applies to Greenlanders, she says.
Naleraq will present their candidates for the Danish Parliament on Monday, March 9. It will be at a press conference on Monday at 1:30 p.m.

This is stated by the party in a press release.

The parliamentary elections will be held on March 24, and apart from IA, Naleraq and Demokraatit have not presented candidates either.

Doris J. Jensen is running for the Folketing
Doris J. Jensen confirms to Sermitsiaq that she is running for the Folketing.
– Yes, I decided to run for the election last week, says Doris J. Jensen.
She is not new to the world of politics. She sat in the Folketing from 2011 to 2015. In addition, she has previously been a member of both Naalakkersuisut and Inatsisartut, but was not elected to Inatsisartut in the elections last year.
Today she sits on the municipal council of Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, while Kim Kielsen is on leave from the municipal council.
Doris J. Jensen is a teacher at Atuarfik Hans Lynge for the oldest students, but she is sure that she has something to contribute if she is elected to the Danish Parliament.
– While we are at the center of the world, it is important that there are people with knowledge and experience who stand for election. I am glad that there are also several new candidates running for Siumut. It is our hallmark at Siumut that we come up with both new and experienced candidates.
– The most important thing for me is that it has never been more important to defend our country, in a time when there is a lot of unrest in the world.
There are now a total of six candidates for the Danish Parliament from Siumut.

IA invites to a coffee meeting for Aaja Chemnitz
In response to Aaja Chemnitz not running again in the general election, Inuit Ataqatigiit is hosting a coffee party for the politician on Thursday.
Aaja Chemnitz has been a member of the Danish Parliament for the IA since 2015:
- We therefore wish to express our sincere gratitude for her great efforts and commitment as an elected official. , writes Inuit Ataqatigiit on Facebook.

Aka Hansen wants to strengthen legal security for Greenlandic parents in Denmark
Candidate for the Danish Parliament election for Siumut, Aka Hansen, wants to work for greater legal security for Greenlandic parents in Denmark, she writes in a press release.
- Greenlandic parents experience being assessed and judged in a system that neither understands their linguistic nor cultural background, writes Aka Hansen and continues:
- When a system repeatedly produces decisions that are perceived as incomprehensible and unfair by those involved, then it is not the families who are at fault. It is the system.
In recent years, several cases of forced removal of children from Greenlandic parents in Denmark have created great public debate and protests against the situation.
Aka Hansen writes that legal certainty is a fundamental right, and that Greenlandic parents in Denmark should be met with “the same respect, the same professionalism and the same legal protection as all other citizens.”

Najaaraq Møller is running for the Folketing for Siumut
Najaaraq Møller has been a member of Inatsisartut and has worked to promote the self-determination of Greenlanders in their own country and participated in debates.
She is now running for the Folketing. Siumut writes this in a press release.
- It has become more important than ever to defend the self-determination of the Greenlandic people in the Folketing, she says.
In the press release, Najaaraq Møller emphasizes the increasing interest in Greenland from the international community.
- Therefore, it has become extremely important that we Greenlanders protect our self-determination to a greater extent. At the same time, the time has come for us to cooperate with other countries to spread and promote our interests.
She is running for the Folketing to work to ensure that the Greenlandic people have a better position than today.
-
Siumut Deputy Chairman to Run for Parliament
Siumut is now presenting another candidate for the Parliament.
This is political deputy chairman of the party Ineqi Kielsen.
Ineqi Kielsen writes in a press release about his candidacy that he wants to be a clear voice in the Parliament:
- If Greenland is to move responsibly towards greater self-determination, it requires that we take responsibility in the institutions where power currently lies.
- The Parliament is one of them, writes Ineqi Kielsen.
He believes that the debate about Greenland in Denmark is often simplified and reduced to a question of block grants. The reality is more complex, he writes:
- Greenland contributes to Denmark's geopolitical position. Greenland is central to NATO's Arctic strategy. Greenland gives Denmark a global relevance that far exceeds the country's size, says the politician.
Ineqi Kielsen also ran for the 2019 general election, where he received 805 votes.
-
Elvira Kûitse will not run again
The deputy for Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam (N) in the last parliamentary term will not run again when the general election is due on March 24.
– No, I won't, Elvira Kûitse writes briefly to Sermitsiaq's question about whether she is on the ballot for Naleraq.
Elvira Kûitse entered the Folketing in the fall of 2025, when Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam took leave to take care of her political work in Inatsisartut. This made her the first East Greenlander in the Folketing.
Kûitse received 120 personal votes in the 2022 parliamentary election. Like Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam, she ran for Siumut at the time, but later switched to Naleraq.
-
Confirmed: Aki-Matilda is also leaving the Folketing
It is now certain that Greenland will have two new members of the Folketing.
On Thursday, Aaja Chemnitz (IA) announced that she will not be re-running, and on Thursday evening, party chairwoman in Naleraq Pele Broberg announced that Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam will not be re-running either.
The party chairwoman thanks Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam for her work:
- We see you. We appreciate you. We support you 100% in your decision not to run again, writes Pele Broberg on Facebook.
Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam has previously announced that she will not be re-running for the Folketing, partly because she is now also a member of Inatsisartut, where she will use her strength.
-
- The challenges have not diminished
In a video on TikTok from Thursday evening, Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam explains more about her decision:
- Right now I am in Uummannaq, and you have probably heard that there are elections for the Folketing. I just want to say it so that everyone is on board:
- I have decided not to run for the Folketing. Therefore, I would like to thank everyone who has supported me. We have achieved a lot. I am absolutely certain that the next members will also do everything for their work, Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam says in the video, among other things, and continues:
- The challenges in our country have not diminished, and therefore I will use my energy and my time to focus on them. Therefore, I would also like to thank my colleagues in the Folketing, including Aaja. Even though we don't always agree, I would like to thank you for the good cooperation we have had.
Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam ran for the 2022 general election for Siumut. She received a landslide victory with 6,670 votes, corresponding to 33 percent of all votes cast in the election.
In February 2025, prior to the Inatsisartut election, she switched parties from Siumut to Naleraq.
