It has been a strange start to the first day of trial in the case against a former manager from Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, who is charged with fraud and abuse of authority.

The court has decided to continue the case, despite defense attorney Vilhelm Dickmeiss’ claim that formalities were not observed.

The court has also decided to lift the name ban at Sermitsiaq’s request. Sermitsiaq is still not mentioning the man’s name ahead of a possible verdict, but the lifting of the name ban gives us more freedom to discuss the case.

The former municipal manager takes his seat in the middle of the courtroom at around 11:15. As a defendant, he is not obliged to make a statement, but chooses to do so.

The prosecutor starts with the first count out of four. The first count is for the unauthorized use of a Eurocard in his name, issued by Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq. The prosecutor believes that 23,550 kroner was defrauded in a period from 2018 to 2019.

Paid for games

He presents documents showing what the card has paid for. There are a number of entries with payments that appear to be related to computer games – such as “PlayStation” and “Fortnite”.

The defendant denies that he has misused the card for private purposes or allowed others to do so. He objected to Eurocard at the time and closed the card. He had also informed the then municipal director Lars Møller-Sørensen, he tells the court.

Møller-Sørensen appears again in the review of the second count out of four, where the defendant had bought a trip for four people for 23,195 kroner. The man in court is accused of unlawfully getting the municipality to pay for his vacation. We will not get that far in count 2 before there is a lunch break in court.

However, the first counts are relatively less important in the overall case against the man. He is also accused of illegally helping a company to win a contract with the municipality. We will return to this later in the trial.

A verdict in the case is expected on Thursday.
