In Tasiilaq, cold snaps are not unusual at this time of year, but the latest storm has been different.

– The storm has been here for many days, and it is incredibly cold. The cold factor is very high, and we don't usually have such a high cold factor for several days at a time, says Hjørdis Viberg, regional manager in East Greenland in Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq.

The cold has created several practical challenges. The water pipes at the municipal office are frozen, and there is therefore no access to water.

– We have to remain closed today until the problem is resolved. We hope it can be fixed tomorrow, says Hjørdis Viberg.

Has had frozen water before

Employees at the municipal office in Tasiilaq have been sent home, and those who can are working from home.

The office also experienced the same problem on Friday, when it was also closed due to lack of water. The problem was solved at that time, but the cold has again created new challenges.

The recreation office has temporarily moved to the community center. Citizens who need to contact the recreation office can therefore contact them there.

If you need to contact the municipality during the storm, you can call the municipality's emergency services on telephone number 113 or 36 77 89, the municipality informs.

Daycare centers and the school were also closed yesterday due to Piteraq, but have now reopened.

According to DMI, the strong winds are expected to continue from 5:00 PM on February 25th to 2:00 AM on February 26th.
