Duty-free sales of goods at the upcoming Atlantic airport in Ilulissat are a priority for Greenland Airports, which also looks forward to supporting air freight that can benefit the two municipalities in the north.
International passenger traffic is expected to be relatively limited in the initial period following the opening of the new airport in Ilulissat. This is the explanation for the airport company starting out with a so-called unmanned retail solution, based on self-service, according to a paragraph 37 response to Demokraatits Justus Hansen.
Duty-free shop in 2028
- The ambition is to establish a real duty-free shop at Ilulissat Airport from the 2028 tourist season. This is based on the fact that the route offering is expanded with more international connections and the total passenger capacity around the destination is further developed, writes Greenland Airports.
Justus Hansen has also asked to be informed about the possibilities for flying cargo out of airports, including the export of fresh raw materials.
In this connection, Greenland Airports reveals that it is planning to create an independent cargo department in the old airport terminal.
Cargo scanner purchased
- From the opening, it will be possible to send air cargo out of Ilulissat, including the export of fresh raw materials. This is a high-priority area, not least in light of Ilulissat's importance within the fishing industry, Greenland Airports informs, pointing out that it can support the export of fish to auction markets in Europe and North America. In this connection, the airport company has purchased a cargo scanner.
