The US will expand its military presence in Greenland, which President Donald Trump has previously threatened to take control of.
Specifically, the US military has its eye on three different places where the world's largest military power wants to station soldiers and build bases.
According to an associate professor, a possible agreement on this would be in the interest of Denmark and Greenland.
- The US military has been asked to find something realistic that is not too expensive or stupid, and this makes sense because you have been there before, and you don't have to start over, says associate professor Marc Jacobsen from the Danish Defense Academy.
The world paid close attention to the crisis because it was the first time that the superpower directly threatened an ally. Since January, officials on both sides have been negotiating, while the threats have been on hold.
Interested in Narsarsuaq and Kangerlussuaq
According to the New York Times, the United States Northern Command is interested in bases in the settlements of Narsarsuaq and Kangerlussuaq.
Narsarsuaq has a deep-water port, and Kangerlussuaq, formerly Søndre Strømfjord, has a well-established airport with the ability to land large aircraft.
Associate Professor Marc Jacobsen also mentions either a possible base in East Greenland near the Sirius Patrol or a base with a deep-water port near Pituffik Space Base, which is the only remaining American base.
Marc Jacobsen calls it a good agreement in isolation and a desired scenario for Denmark and Greenland. He believes that it is realistic to reach an agreement on this.
Lecturer: Greenland can preserve settlement
The airport in Kangerlussuaq has remained open, even though a new airport has been opened in the capital Nuuk, which has taken over international flights.
According to the lecturer, this is due, among other things, to the fact that the US has an interest in being able to use the airport, and the positive thing is that it can lead to jobs and preserve small communities.
- It is within a playing field where Denmark is comfortable, and Greenland can preserve the settlement, which is largely tied to the airport. The same can be said about Narsarsuaq, where people have moved away, he says.
Marc Jacobsen understands perfectly well if someone is skeptical about the prospect of an increased American military presence after the threats.
- But it is important to distinguish between Trump and the rest of the US, because it is positive tones from the defense, which report good lines of communication. But it is important to keep in mind whether Trump is satisfied.
- Experience shows that Trump wants to appear as a winner in order to move forward with his agenda, he says.
