Indictment in court: Young woman killed her mother

On Tuesday morning, the Sermersooq Circuit Court in Nuuk began the case of a violent and tragic incident in Tasiilaq last summer.

On June 26, 2025, a 55-year-old woman died after being stabbed, and the police arrested a 25-year-old woman, who was charged with murder. On Tuesday, it emerged in court that the two people in the case are mother and daughter.

The prosecutor believes that the young woman should be sentenced to eight years in prison for manslaughter. According to the indictment, she stabbed her victim approximately 75 times in their shared home.

- Closed her eyes and stabbed

The daughter says that it is true that she stabbed her mother. The young woman is clearly affected during her testimony. She says that the mother herself got a knife and asked to be stabbed.

- She kept saying that I should kill her. I closed my eyes and stabbed her twice. It was in the head and on the knee.

The woman confirms that she also stabbed her mother several times afterwards. There may have been more than one knife involved. The woman has not pleaded guilty to the indictment's claim of approximately 75 stabs.

The incident took place in connection with a celebration of an event at the home in Tasiilaq, where alcohol was also consumed.

Ask the neighbor to call the police

We expect to learn more about what happened that night with the help of more witnesses called. However, we already know that only the two people were present during the incident with the knife.

“I then went over to the neighbor and told them to call the police because I stabbed my mother. I sat on the couch and waited,” the young woman continues.

The mother was possibly still alive after the stabbing. She was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead that same evening.

The young woman has also not confirmed that she herself wanted her mother dead. It may be the defense's claim that she should be acquitted of manslaughter because she did not intend to kill. We will return to that.
