According to kvf.fo, parliamentarian Aksel V. Johannesen has called elections for the Faroese parliament. The elections will be held on March 26.
The reason is a lack of trust between the government parties, he says, according to Kringvarp Føroya, the Faroese national radio and television.
- Trust between the government parties has fundamentally not been present, says Aksel V. Johannesen from the Javnaðarflokkurin to the media.
The parliament is elected for a four-year term. However, it can be dissolved before the election period expires if the parliamentarian decides to call elections, or if the parliament decides to dissolve before the end of the term.
Following the last election to the Faroese parliament, the Lagting, in December 2022, the social democratic Javnaðarflokkurin, the left-wing separatist party Tjóðveldi and the social liberal centrist party Framsókn formed a majority government in the Faroe Islands.
Javnaðarflokkurin became the largest party in the election with 9 seats out of 33 possible, while Tjóðveldi received 6 and Framsókn 3 seats.
Javnaðarflokkurin went from 22.5 percent of the vote in the 2019 election to 26.6 percent of the vote in 2022.
The Faroe Islands and the approximately 50,000 inhabitants are part of the Faroese Commonwealth. The islands were granted home rule in 1948 and self-government in 2005.
The Landsgyter is the self-governing government of the archipelago, which is headed by the Lagman. The National Council is normally elected every four years by the Lagtinget.
Aksel V. Johannesen has been the Lagman since the 2022 election. Before that, Bárður á Steig Nielsen from the civil-liberal party Sambandsflokkurin - a counterpart to the Liberal Party - was the Lagman.
Sambandsflokkurin received 7 mandates in the 2022 election, while Fólkaflokkurin received 6 mandates and Miðflokkurin 2 mandates.
The Faroe Islands are not a member of the EU, but are represented by two members in the Folketing in Copenhagen.
Currently, Sjúrður Skaale from Javnaðarflokkurin and Anna Falkenberg from Sambandsflokkurin.
