On Sunday, Naalakkersuisut chairman Jens-Frederik Nielsen (D) rejected the idea that Greenland wants to receive an American hospital ship that US President Donald Trump wants to send to the island.
The announcement has led to a strong reaction from US special envoy to Greenland, Jeff Landry. In a post on X, he writes that Jens-Frederik Nielsen should be ashamed:
- Shame on you, Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen!
- President @realDonaldTrump and America are worried, Landry writes in the post.
According to Landry, he has spoken to "many Greenlanders about their daily problems," and healthcare stands out in particular.
- Many villages and small towns lack basic services that Americans often take for granted. Small settlements lack regular doctors, diagnostic tools, or specialized treatment—forcing residents to travel long distances to get vital treatments that should be available at home. A healthy Greenland is essential to America's national security, writes Jeff Landry on X.
On Sunday, Jens-Frederik Nielsen responded to Donald Trump's announcement that he, in collaboration with Jeff Landry, was sending a "hospital ship" to Greenland to treat people who are not being cared for:
- It's going to be a no-no from here. President Trump's idea of sending an American hospital ship here to Greenland is on the table. But we have a public healthcare system where treatment is free for citizens. It's a conscious choice. And a fundamental part of our society, wrote Jens-Frederik Nielsen on Facebook.
