Inatsisartut meets today: Siumut to be in opposition and new members of Naalakkersuisut to be approved

The spring session starts on Tuesday, and it must be decided, among other things, whether Kim Kielsen will continue as chairman of Inartisartut, and who will join as new members of Naalakkersuisut.

A lot has happened since the members of Inatsisartut last gathered for a single meeting on February 2 to debate the great pressure from the United States.

Siumut has withdrawn from the coalition, and on Tuesday it will be revealed what consequences this will have for parliamentary work.

Inatsisartut opens the spring session at 10 a.m., and the first items on the agenda reveal that there will be a major reshuffle of chairmanships and committee members, and new members of Naalakkersuisut must also be approved.

Chairmanships in play

Several important positions in Inatsisartut are in play after Siumut resigned. First of all, it concerns the position of chairman of the parliament itself, which Kim Kielsen currently holds.

The election for this important position and the rest of the chairmanship is the first thing politicians will have to decide on Tuesday.

Next, Siumut also heads the two important committees, the Finance and Tax Committee, with Erik Jensen, and the Fisheries, Hunting and Agriculture Committee, with Lars Poulsen, which will probably also be changed.

In connection with Siumut's resignation from the coalition, both Kim Kielsen and Vivian Motzfeldt chose to resign from the party, and thus the previously powerful party is only represented by two members at today's meeting in Inatsisartut.

Vivian Motzfeldt and Kim Kielsen have apparently not yet decided whether they will join other parties, as they appear as independents on Inatsisartut's list of members.

New members of Naalakkersuisut

After the election of the presidency of Inatsisartut, and before deciding on the committee positions, the chairman of Naalakkersuisut, Jens-Frederik Nielsen (D), has one item on the agenda: Election of members of Naalakkersuisut.

Here he will ask Inatsisartut to approve what are probably four new members of Naalakkersuisut.

Siumut's departure from the coalition and the parliamentary election meant that two more members have left Naalakkersuisut in the form of Vivian Motzfeldt (foreign affairs and research) and Naaja H. Nathanielsen (business, minerals, energy, justice and equality).

This means that the Greenland Government is down to six members, down from 10 from the coalition's inception last year. No replacements have been appointed for Mads Pedersen and Bentiaraq Ottosen, who left Greenland at the end of 2025.

Sermitsiaq is of course following today's meeting and the distribution of chairman and Greenland Government positions closely.
