Both in Greenland and Denmark, it could have been realized earlier that US President Donald Trump meant his desire for control over Greenland.
This is what Greenland's former head of government, Múte B. Egede, says to TV 2.
- We may have been on the verge of some naivety. We were very cautious. Not just in Greenland and Denmark, but in the entire Western alliance. Maybe we could have done it differently, it says.
Asked what it could have done, he says he thinks it could have gotten some respect, TV 2 reports.
Múte B. Egede is chairman of IA and remains part of Naalakkersuisut, now as naalakkersuisoq for finance and taxes.
Trump has had Greenland in his sights for a long time
Since Donald Trump became president of the United States in early 2025, his desire for the United States to gain greater control over Greenland has repeatedly been in focus.
The US president has claimed that the US needs Greenland for security reasons. Already in his first term as president, he also offered to buy Greenland.
Donald Trump announced in January that he had agreed with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on the framework for an agreement on Greenland and the Arctic. This came after Trump had long expressed a desire to claim Greenland.
However, details about the agreement between Trump and Rutte remain sparse.
At the same time, Denmark, the United States and Greenland have agreed to a working group to discuss a possible solution.
Fully supports Jens-Frederik
Múte B. Egede emphasizes in the interview with TV 2 that he fully supports how his replacement, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has handled the situation.
The former head of government tells the media that the unrest surrounding Greenland has greatly affected society.
He does not believe that one can return to the Greenland that was 14-15 months ago, it continues.
