A very clear message has now come from Naalakkersuisut. The President of Naalakkersuisut emphasizes that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark:
- Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. As part of the Commonwealth, Greenland is a member of NATO, and the defense of Greenland must therefore be through NATO, states the Chairman of the Greenland Government in a brief press release, and he continues:
- Based on the very positive statement from the 6 NATO member states regarding Greenland, the Government of Greenland will increase its efforts to ensure that the defense of Greenland takes place under the auspices of NATO.
- All member states of NATO, including the United States, have a common interest in the defense of Greenland, and the government coalition in Greenland will therefore work together with Denmark to ensure that the dialogue on and development of the defense in Greenland takes place within NATO cooperation.
Finally, the Chairman of the Government of Greenland emphasizes that the government coalition in Greenland believes that Greenland will always be part of the Western defense alliance.
Greenland and Denmark on common ground
This suggests that Greenland and Denmark have coordinated with each other prior to the meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday.
Prior to that, Naalakkersuisoq's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vivian Motzfeldt (S), has indicated to DR that she sees nothing wrong with Greenland being able to hold a meeting with the US without Denmark.
But now the President of the Greenlandic Government emphasizes that Greenland, together with Denmark, will work to ensure that the dialogue about and development of the defense in Greenland takes place within NATO cooperation.
Vivian Motzfeldt has announced the following in a brief update on her private Facebook page:
- Dear compatriots, first of all, I would like to thank you for your wishes for a good meeting and thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving us strength, it really gives us a lot of strength.
- I want to promise you that we will do everything to work for our beloved country. We are going through a very difficult time these days, in my department we are active and strong, and I promise you that I will have you in my heart and work to achieve the best position in the situation.
