New agreement on helicopters in South Greenland

The Ministry of Housing, Infrastructure and Outlying Areas and Air Greenland have entered into a new service contract for regional air traffic after the airport in Qaqortoq opens. The agreement will be valid for one year.

The H155 helicopter will still be flying for a while in South Greenland.

The new airport in Qaqortoq will open as planned on April 16, 2026, and a service contract has now been concluded for the first year until April 2027.

– In order to create more certainty about passenger transport in South Greenland, it has been important to have a temporary solution in place. At the same time, I place great importance on local involvement, which is why we are holding an infrastructure seminar in Qaqortoq in these few days. Here, local stakeholders contribute with input to the future traffic structure towards 2030, says naalakkersuisoq for housing and infrastructure Aqqaluaq B. Egede.

The agreement means that it is now possible to buy combined tickets that include helicopter traffic in South Greenland.

Air Greenland writes that the company is pleased to meet the desire for clarity that has been requested by many passengers.

– Now they can buy a continuous journey to and from South Greenland to the rest of the country and abroad. This provides greater security for our customers – also during periods of delays and cancellations, says Jacob Nitter Sørensen.

A new public tender will follow

Sales of regular airline tickets between Nuuk and Qaqortoq started already in 2025.

The service contract includes two H125 helicopters based in Qaqortoq, which fly to Narsaq and Nanortalik year-round and the settlements in the periods 1 January-31 May and 1 September-25 October 2026, Air Greenland states in its press release.

The H155 helicopter currently serving the region from Narsarsuaq will continue to operate during a transitional period while the new helicopters and crews are phased in.

When the interim agreement expires in 2027, the plan is to conduct a public tender for helicopter traffic in South Greenland through 2030.
