President Emmanuel Macron's promise has come true on February 6, as France now has a new consul at a new consulate in Nuuk.
The new consul is named Jean-Noël Poirier and arrived in Nuuk on Friday as planned, along with a delegation from Canada, which is now opening their new consulate in the city.
However, the French consul does not yet have a physical consulate. The French are still looking for suitable premises for their new representation, a spokesman says.
According to the French Foreign Ministry, the new consul's task is to develop cultural, scientific and economic ties between Greenland and France.
Jean-Noël Poirier, a former French ambassador to Vietnam and diplomat in Libya, was formally appointed earlier this week.
The new French consulate was promised by President Emmanuel Macron during his visit to Nuuk on June 15, 2025.
– We have decided to open a new consulate general here in Nuuk to be closer to you and stand by your side, the president said at the time.
France was previously represented in Nuuk by Krissie Berthelsen Winberg in a position as honorary consul.
