Election posters and lamppost collisions: Nukissiorfiit calls for responsibility and cooperation

When the election campaign is conducted leading up to the election on March 24, more election posters will appear in the cityscape as usual. Nukissiorfiit therefore reminds us of the rules for hanging posters on electricity poles and street lights. At the same time, the company is focusing on a problem with hit lampposts in Nuuk.

Every year, around 150 lampposts in Nuuk are damaged – often by collisions. At the same time, Nukissiorfiit reminds us of the rules for putting up election posters on electricity poles and street lamps in connection with the general election.

There are around 3,000 street lights in Nuuk, and every year around 150 masts are damaged – primarily by collisions. Since Nuuk is also the city in Greenland with the most cars, it is also here that the most collisions with lampposts occur, Nukissiorfiit states on its website.

When a mast is hit, it can cost up to 30,000 kroner to repair the damage, according to the utility company. If the perpetrator is not identified, the bill will end up with Nukissiorfiit and the municipality – and thus the community.

In addition to the financial consequences, the damage can also affect safety in the city. Some repairs cannot be carried out during the winter period, which can mean that entire stretches of street lighting are left without light for a long time.

Nukissiorfiit emphasizes that collisions are rarely intentional, but encourages citizens to report it if they accidentally hit a pole.

If you witness a collision, you are also encouraged to contact the police and note the time, place and information about the perpetrator, such as the license plate or company name.

Election campaign posters may be put up under certain conditions

At the same time, Nukissiorfiit reminds that in connection with the election, permission may be granted to hang election posters on electricity poles and street lights - but only under certain conditions. The posters must be attached with strips, twine or the like, and steel wire may not be used. They may also not be placed so that they obstruct the view of traffic.

For safety reasons, the posters must also be placed at least 1.5 meters from overhead electrical lines. In addition, it is not permitted to put up posters on Nukissiorfiit's buildings such as power stations, valve houses, septic tanks and other technical facilities.

All posters must be removed no later than three days after the election, without leaving strips, string or other residue on the poles. If posters are not removed no later than eight days after the election, Nukissiorfiit will remove them and may send the invoice to the responsible party.

Nukissiorfiit therefore calls on both road users and political parties to show responsibility in the city space. By driving carefully, reporting damage and adhering to the rules for hanging posters, citizens can help ensure that cities and settlements remain safe and well lit.
