The defense alliance NATO has begun planning a new mission in the Arctic.
This was stated by NATO spokesman Martin O'Donnell on Tuesday, according to AFP.
- Planning for an enhanced NATO surveillance activity called "Arctic Sentry" has begun, the spokesperson says.
In a post on X, Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen (V) welcomes the announcement.
- Very pleased that NATO now confirms that the military planning of the NATO mission "Arctic Sentry" is underway. Both Denmark and Greenland have fought for a larger NATO presence in and around Greenland.
- It is crucial that we, together with NATO allies, make a joint effort to increase security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic, writes Troels Lund Poulsen.
Both Troels Lund Poulsen and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) have said that Denmark wants a permanent NATO presence in Greenland and the Arctic.
The same wish is shared by Greenland's Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
Mette Frederiksen has also said that the situation surrounding Greenland is now running on two tracks.
One track is about NATO and increased military presence in the Arctic, while another track is the diplomatic negotiations that have been initiated between Denmark and Greenland on the one hand and the United States on the other.
The focus on Greenland and security in the Arctic has become a theme following US President Donald Trump's pressure for Greenland to be taken over by the US.
