On Tuesday, there was question time in the Danish Parliament with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who subsequently took questions from the media at Christiansborg Palace.
One of the questions was from KNR, who wanted to hear whether Denmark and the EU could guarantee that they would not abandon Greenland regardless of any threats the American president might make.
– In any case, I will not abandon Greenland. I made that decision a long time ago as Danish Prime Minister, said Mette Frederiksen, who can well understand the feelings that many in Greenland are currently experiencing.
– I know many in Greenlandic society, and I think it is so unfair that the Greenlandic population has been put in this situation, said Mette Frederiksen, referring to Naalakkersuisut in relation to preparedness, before adding that she hoped that everyone was aware that there was of course very close cooperation between Naalakkersuisut and the Danish government during this time.
Popular support for Greenland
Sermitsiaq asked if the Prime Minister felt that there was a movement underway in the United States and elsewhere in the world in favor of Greenland? And whether there was hope?
– I think we can feel popular support for Greenland that goes across national borders. I myself was very moved by the images on Saturday from the demonstrations in Nuuk and cities around Denmark, where so many people took to the streets. And I think you can feel that there is a lot of support for Greenland in this situation, both European, Nordic and global. And you should not be mistaken that many in the US are convinced that Denmark is a good ally and that Greenland is part of NATO - and that we should therefore not have a conflict with each other, said Mette Frederiksen, before adding:
– I definitely think there is hope. There are many Greenlanders who are good at putting words and images to what it means to be a Greenlander in this situation. I think that will provide a lot of support and solidarity. And there is hope associated with that, said Mette Frederiksen.
