On April 9, the Veterinary and Food Authority (VFMG) received a report about a possible contagious disease among sled dogs in Kuummiut.
This is stated by the VFMG in a press release.
The report concerned three puppies from two different dog teams.
According to the VFMG, the cause of the disease has not been determined, but it is likely an infection with parvovirus, which is fatal to dogs. The disease is not contagious to humans.
VFMG states that vaccinations have recently been carried out in Kuummiut and vaccination guidelines have been tightened for a period of time, in cooperation with the authorities in Tasiilaq and the dog vaccinator in Kuummiut.
VFMG does not fear a major outbreak in connection with the three cases of disease, but the authority reminds that vaccination of sled dogs is a legal requirement throughout Greenland.
The vaccination is free of charge for dog owners in the sled dog districts.
