Tasiilaq: Three days of piteraq and cold factor down to minus 37 degrees

Poor visibility and heavy snowfall are causing the municipality to close schools, daycare centers and public offices on Tuesday.

Tasiilaq, like many other places in Greenland, has lacked snow, but in mid-February large amounts have fallen.

A piteraq has been warned in Tasiilaq from Monday at 4 p.m., and the storm is expected to hit the city for up to three days.

According to Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq’s Facebook page, heavy snowfall is also expected, and with a calculated cold factor of down to -37 degrees, the situation is giving rise to safety concerns.

The heavy snowfall in particular is expected to create significant challenges in the city. Visibility for snow removal machines will be very poor during the storm, and since there are no sidewalks in the city, it can be extra dangerous for citizens to be outdoors.

For the safety of citizens, the municipality has decided to close schools, daycare centers, after-school programs and other public offices on Tuesday, February 24. The municipality is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates throughout the day.
