Tasiilaq: Three days of piteraq and cold factor down to -37

Poor visibility and heavy snowfall are causing the municipality to close schools, daycare centers and public offices on Tuesday.

Tasiilaq, like many other places in Greenland, has lacked snow, but in mid-February large amounts have fallen.

A snowstorm has been forecast in Tasiilaq from today at 4:00 p.m., and the storm is expected to hit the city for up to three days. According to Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq’s Facebook page, the situation, combined with heavy snowfall and an estimated cold factor of down to -37 degrees, is causing serious safety concerns.

The heavy snowfall in particular is expected to create significant challenges in the city. Visibility for snow removal machines will be very poor during the storm, and since there are no sidewalks in the city, it can be extra dangerous for citizens to be outdoors.

In the interest of citizens’ safety, the municipality has decided to close schools, daycare centers, recreational programs and other public offices on Tuesday, February 24. The municipality is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates throughout the day.
