While US President Donald Trump was on his way to the World Economic Forum in Davos, several Republican congressmen – including Andy Ogles, Anna Paulina Luna and Abe Hamadeh – attended an event at the Kennedy Center.
The three are known as Trump supporters and are associated with the pro-Trump wing of the Republican Party.
Romanian politician participates
In addition to the Republican congressmen, Romanian politician George Simion is also seen in the video. He is the leader of the AUR (Alliance for the Union of Romanians) party and has been described in international media as pro-Russian.
In the recording, he also cuts the cake, while several bystanders film and comment on the incident.
According to Politico, George Simion lost the Romanian presidential election in 2025, and he has been accused of acting as a Russian agent and was even banned from entering Ukraine for promoting a “unionist ideology that denies the legitimacy of Ukraine’s state border,” according to Politico.
Criticism is raining down
The New Republic also reproduces criticism from Antoine Bondaz, an advisor to the European Commission, who writes on social media that the video shows how some in the United States see Greenland and Greenlanders “as a cake to be cut and shared with smiles and laughter.”
He adds: “I’m sorry, but this is deeply disrespectful and frankly pathetic.”
In addition, The New Republic quotes American activist Fred Guttenberg, who also responds on social media. He writes that “Putin must be celebrating this” and that those involved are “enablers” who, according to him, “are literally handing the United States over to Putin.”
