Great Britain will deploy an aircraft carrier force in the North Atlantic and the High North this year.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced this in a speech at the annual security conference in Munich.
This is reported by the BBC.
- I can announce today that Britain will deploy our aircraft carrier force in the North Atlantic and the High North, he said in the speech.
The operation will be carried out together with the United States, Canada and other NATO allies, it was said. Starmer did not elaborate on which other allies were involved.
In the speech, he also said that it was a "powerful signal" ("powerful show", ed.) of Britain's commitment to Euro-Atlantic security.
The force is Britain's multinational task force, led by the Royal Navy. Previous partners include Canada, Norway and Spain, according to the Navy's website.
The message from Starmer comes at a time when there has been international focus on Greenland, which US President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed a strong interest in taking over. However, this has been rejected by both the Danish and Greenlandic sides.
On Friday, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) and Greenland's head of government, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, had a meeting with Rubio, which Frederiksen described as "constructive".
On Saturday, Keir Starmer was asked after the speech whether the threat to Greenland is over.
Here, Starmer replied that he is happy to see that the issue of Greenland is in dialogue, and emphasizes again that security in the Arctic "is really important to all of us".

In December, Britain and Norway signed a defense pact to protect critical infrastructure in the North Atlantic.
The agreement is called "Lunna House" and aims to protect critical infrastructure such as undersea cables and pipelines with a fleet of 13 frigates.
On Thursday, NATO countries, with support from the United States, agreed that security in the Arctic should be addressed through the NATO mission Arctic Sentry.
