Since November 2024, citizens in Greenland have had the opportunity to have their nationality stated in their passports as both Greenlandic and Danish.
However, the change in the rules has not included people with a Greenlandic background living in Denmark. Member of Parliament Aaja Chemnitz wants this to change.
The IA politician points out in his address to the Danish Minister of Justice Peter Hummelgaard that there are more than 17,000 Greenlanders in Denmark, which corresponds to 25 percent of Greenland's population.
Great understanding
In his response to Aaja Chemnitz the Minister of Justice states that he has “great understanding of the importance that the Greenlandic sense of identity has for the Greenlandic people”.
- If the Greenlandic Government has a desire to do so (to adjust the passport rules to apply to Greenlanders residing in Denmark, ed.), the government is open to taking a closer look at the question of who should be able to be issued a Greenlandic nationality passport, writes Peter Hummelgaard in his response.
However, he refers to the fact that the case should be included in “the Greenlandic Government’s usual prioritization of cases in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice”.
