The hotel industry experienced a boom in guests last year, with people from abroad in particular driving the growth.
- In 2025, there were a total of 169,366 overnight guests and 396,846 overnight stays at hotels, hostels and other accommodation in Greenland, which are part of the basis for the statistics, according to Statistics Greenland.
If you delve into the numbers, it turns out that it is the category of people from abroad that has helped send the numbers to record highs.
Thus, the number of foreign overnight guests increased from 27,671 in 2024 to 40,486 in 2025, which is a growth of 46.3 percent. People from Greenland were behind a percentage increase of 22.2 percent, while fewer guests from Denmark were registered who chose to stay overnight. Here, the Statistics Office registered a decrease of 2.7 percent.
Decline in two regions
However, not all places in the country can celebrate. Thus, two regions have experienced a decrease in the number of overnight guests: Qeqqata Municipality and Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq Øst.
The big high jumper was – not surprisingly – the capital municipality of Sermersooq West, which had an increase in hotel overnight stays of 49.7 percent. Here, the new Atlantic airport in Nuuk has undoubtedly had a major impact on growth.
In the north, accommodation establishments also experienced a major growth. Ilulissat alone can boast a plus of 17.7 percent. While the region Avannaata Kommunia and Municipality Qeqartalik, which also includes Ilulissat, saw a growth of 15 percent.
46 accommodation establishments – the largest in the country – are included as the basis for the statistics, it is stated, which may be subject to uncertainty due to delayed reporting.
