The time zone change affects the solar day

Margrethe Thorleifsen tells AG that it was a great refreshment for their settlement when the sun rose again in Kullorsuaq on February 12.

- She is happy that there are more outdoor activities during the spring. It is clear that the children are coming out more, and it is as if our village is coming alive again, says Margrethe Thorleifsen.

Margrethe says that in the past, when the sun rose again, there was a sled race competition in Naajaat.

- There were football matches on the ice, children played against women, and the men from Kullorsuaq and Naajaat played football.

In connection with the sunrise, the dog sledding association "Qimusseriaq" announced that the dog sled race has been cancelled due to poor ice conditions.

Margrethe explained angrily that because of the time zone change, the schoolchildren's celebration of Sun Day would be affected, and that the sun, which used to rise at noon, would not rise until around two o'clock.

- The sun used to come up the hill that we call the "noon zone" around noon. But at 12:40 the sun had not yet risen.

Margrethe tells AG that a small evening is voluntarily arranged for the elderly in Kullorsuaq to mark Sun Day.
