The United States is inaugurating a new and much larger consulate in Greenland today.

Until now, the superpower has been based in a house at the port of Nuuk, but on Thursday the consulate will open with three floors and 3,000 square meters in the center of the capital.

Since 2020, the United States has borrowed a house from the Arctic Command at the port, but is now moving to larger premises, while the atmosphere is tense between Greenland and Denmark on the one hand and the United States on the other.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to take over Greenland.

Demonstration against the consulate

Therefore, a demonstration against the new opening has been announced for Thursday, in which Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen will not participate.

The protesters will bring banners and stand with their backs to the consulate for two minutes to show their dissatisfaction with the United States.

When the US consulate reopened in Nuuk in 2020, it was attended by several members of the Greenlandic government, Naalakkersuisut.
