405 old-age pensioners lived at the beginning of 2025 in a retirement home or other institution, informs naalakkersuisoq Aqqaluaq B. Egede in a paragraph 37 response to Naleraq's Jens Napatôk’.
When an elderly citizen moves to a retirement home or another institution where the public sector covers the costs of board and lodging, the old-age pension is reduced by 54 percent of the basic amount after a transition period. Any pension supplement will be completely eliminated.
In Jens Napatôk's request to the Government of Greenland, he wanted to know what it would cost the public sector if the elderly were paid their full pension.
Increasing expenses
The response states that the expense for the Treasury will amount to 45 million kroner.
It is also stated that the expense will increase considerably in the coming years.
Due to an increasing number of pensioners in the coming years, a projection has been made that estimates that the amount in just five years will reach 57 million kroner in 2030. Looking ten years ahead, the expense will be 67 million kroner. However, it is emphasized that these figures are subject to "significant uncertainty".
