UPDATED: Another avalanche accident outside Nuuk - young man has died

A young man has died and two others have been injured after a new avalanche accident in the Nuuk hinterland.

Updated 20:10: The police announce that a 17-year-old man has died after the avalanche accident. Two more men were taken to hospital and are out of danger. The fourth person is unharmed. Relatives have been notified.

At 15:45 on Saturday afternoon, a major avalanche accident was reported. This is confirmed by the chief of police at the Greenland Police, Karsten Højrup Kristensen, to Sermitsiaq.

- It is still unknown how many people are involved, but the first reports are that there are probably four people buried in an avalanche accident, says chief of police Karsten Højrup Kristensen to Sermitsiaq.

He further states that a SAR operation has been launched, with Arctic Command and the police working together.

- A helicopter has also been deployed. The rescue operation is still ongoing, and we are still in an urgent phase. I cannot therefore comment further, he says.
