Vivian Motzfeldt resigns from Siumut

The prominent Siumut politician Vivian Motzfeldt resigned from the party on Tuesday. The announcement is a direct consequence of Siumut leaving the coalition on Friday.

- The party is excluding itself, and I cannot be part of that. I work in politics to work for influence, and to give of myself to society. I see no point in continuing with that line, says Vivian Motzfeldt about her breakup with Siumut.

On Tuesday at 12:01, Vivian Motzfeldt resigned from Siumut.

The announcement is a protest against and consequence of the party's executive board's decision last week to withdraw Siumut from the coalition.

Until Friday last week, Vivian Motzfeldt held the important position of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Research of the Greenland Government. In this position, Vivian Motzfeldt played a key role during the crisis with great pressure from the United States.

- Siumut has decided that my work is unnecessary

Motzfeldt tells Sermitsiaq that she believes that Siumut has labeled her work as unnecessary:

- Siumut has decided that my work is unnecessary, and Siumut has also decided that Siumut does not need to have the chairmanship of Inatsisartut. This has happened without involving the relevant people in these matters and without hearing us who work on it, she says.

Here Vivian Motzfeldt refers to Kim Kielsen, who holds the position of chairman of Inatsisartut. A position he is expected to lose when Inatsisartut meets on April 14.

The position is usually included in the coalition negotiations, which is why Kim Kielsen risks losing it now that Siumut has left the coalition.

- Excluding itself

Vivian Motzfeldt says that Siumut is now putting itself outside of political influence:

- The party is excluding itself, and I cannot be part of that. I work in politics to work for influence, and to give of myself to society. I see no point in continuing with that line, says Vivian Motzfeldt.

With Vivian Motzfeldt's resignation, Siumut will lose a mandate in Inatsisartut, and the party will subsequently be left with three mandates.

The three mandates must be seen in light of the violent electoral defeat that the party received in the Inatsisartut election last year. Siumut received a meager four mandates in the 2025 election compared to 10 mandates in the previous election in 2021.
