EDUCATION

Which education should you choose?

The educational opportunities in Greenland are becoming more and more numerous, and it can be difficult to choose a direction. The new biology education SILA, the Armed Forces' basic Arctic education or perhaps the coastal skipper education? Regardless of the choice, it is important to pay attention to the application deadlines.

Arctic Basic Education is expanding again to accommodate more students. In 2024, 22 students were admitted. In 2025, 30 students were admitted. From 2026, the plan is to admit 50 students. According to Arctic Command, there is "plenty of interest to be able to fill the 50 places".

Many education programs have an application deadline of March 1, so if you are about to apply for a program, it is a good idea to check the deadline so that you do not apply too late and may have to wait another year.

A study choice consists of many different considerations. It is not only about a specific field of study. For example, it is important to find an education that suits your preferred working methods, geographical mobility and desire to study in Greenland or abroad.

Help is available in the education guide www.Sunngu.gl. Here you can read more about vocational education, GUX, higher education and qualification courses. In addition, all education is divided into categories so that you can easily target your search. Arctic Basic Education is a popular choice for many young people at the moment.

Arctic Basic Education

One of the education programs that is experiencing increasing interest from young people is the Arctic Basic Education in Kangerlussuaq, which is offered by the Danish Armed Forces.

This is a six-month program with the possibility of applying for up to six months of perspective training afterwards. That is, 1 year in total. The focus is on solving both military and emergency tasks. The education provides opportunities for further education in the Armed Forces.

Since the education was first offered in 2024, the number of students admitted has increased year by year. In 2024, there was room for 22 students. In 2025, it was expanded to 30 students. And now it seems that the students in class three may end up numbering as many as 50 students.

That is at least the political ambition as announced by the Ministry of Defence and the Government of Greenland at the end of January.

According to the Arctic Command, they are experiencing "ample interest in being able to fill 50 places".

The next application deadline - for class 4 starting in 2027 - has not yet been published. The application round for this round has ended. The future students will start in July 2026.
