Elite Sport Greenland unveils its course in the coming years.
With a new strategy for the period 2026–2029, the organization will create a more targeted, transparent and sustainable development of Greenlandic elite sport – with a clear goal of making Greenlandic athletes more competitive internationally.
The strategy is based on the vision of Greenland as a strong elite sports nation, where athletes not only participate, but can also competition for top positions on the international stage. According to Elite Sport Greenland, it is about bringing the entire system – from talents and coaches to organization and facilities – together in one common direction.
– With the strategy for 2026–2029, Elite Sport Greenland is taking an important and necessary step towards raising Greenlandic elite sports to a new level, says chairperson Angutinnguaq Hegelund-Tittussen in a statement to Sermitsiaq.
Three pillars to support the development
The new strategy rests on three overall strategic pillars. The first is about strengthening the existing elite through a new, tiered support concept with clear criteria and greater transparency. Here, Elite Sport Greenland will, among other things, work with systematic measurements of both sporting results and sports enjoyment.
The second pillar focuses on the transition from talent to top athlete. The goal is to build stronger talent programs throughout the country, raise coaching education to international standards and further develop the Knowledge Center for Elite Sports into a national competence center.
The third pillar focuses on the framework surrounding elite sport. Here, the strategy points to the need for better economic conditions, greater visibility and a more active role in the dialogue about facilities and training environments – in cooperation with, among others, the Greenland Sports Federation.
The whole country must be involved
A central element of the strategy is the desire for a broader national anchoring.
Elite Sport Greenland will strengthen the communication and visibility of elite athletes as role models while ensuring that talent and coach development reaches all regions in Greenland.
According to the organization, the results of elite sport should help create community, commitment and national pride – not only in the largest cities, but across the entire country.
- We have set a clear and ambitious direction that will strengthen both athletes, coaches, specialized federations and the organization – and at the same time unite the entire country around the dream of creating a strong elite sports nation. With this strategy, we take responsibility for the future, says leader Angutinnguaq Hegelund-Tittussen.
International focus
The strategy is clearly aimed at Greenland's opportunities outside the country's borders. The expectation is that more structured support, better educated coaches and a stronger organizational framework will give athletes better preparation and more opportunities to make a mark internationally.
– We invest in people, in environments and in communities. And we do so with the belief that Greenlandic athletes can reach the very top when we work in a targeted, long-term and collaborative manner, says leader Angutinnguaq Hegelund-Tittussen.
The strategy is put into practice through annual action plans, which are intended to ensure that the ambitions do not only remain on paper, but can also be felt in training halls, competition venues and in the results in the coming years.
