EU ambassadors have been summoned for an emergency meeting in Brussels on Sunday about Greenland and new customs threats from the President of the United States, Donald Trump.
This is stated by Cyprus, which holds the EU presidency, according to the news agency Reuters on Saturday evening.
The announcement comes a day after Trump has said that Denmark and seven other countries will be hit with tariffs of ten percent from February 1, until the US and Denmark have made a deal on Greenland. Later, the duty rate may increase further.
Meanwhile, European countries are coordinating a response.
EU diplomats say, according to the Reuters news agency, that the meeting is set to begin at 5 p.m.
Denmark and European countries have reacted with joint condemnation of Trump's announcement.
- Tariffs could undermine transatlantic relations and risk leading to a dangerous downward spiral, writes President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen on X.
- Europe will remain united, coordinated and determined to maintain its sovereignty.
On Saturday, thousands of people in Greenland and Denmark demonstrated against the desire for control and ownership of Greenland, which Trump has expressed several times.
During the week, Denmark has tried to increase the dialogue with the USA about Greenland through, among other things, a meeting of foreign ministers in Washington D.C.
At the same time, Denmark has increased the European presence in Greenland with a military exercise with the support of a number of countries.
That was precisely one of Trump's points of criticism when, in a longer posting on Truth Social, he made his announcement about tariffs against Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland. All countries participate in the military exercise.
- This is a very dangerous situation for the safety and survival of the planet. These countries, playing this very dangerous game, have introduced a level of risk that is unsustainable, Trump wrote.
