While the relationship between Greenland and the United States are tense, the news pours in.
Most recently, Trump's special envoy to Greenland, Jeff Landry, has plans to visit the country in March, according to Fox News. He stated this during an interview with the news channel.
According to Member of Parliament Aaja Chemnitz, Jeff Landry is going to Greenland to see Avannaata Qimussersua.
This is where tourism business owner Kristian Jeremiassen comes into the picture.
Kristian Jeremiassen and his family run Experience Qasigiannguit, and he confirmed to KNR on Tuesday that he has previously sent Landry an offer to come to Greenland and see Avannaata Qimussersua.
After Landry's statements about an upcoming visit, we contacted Kristian Jeremiassen:
- I cannot comment on that. He has to do that himself. We do not comment on our customers, says Kristian Jeremiassen.
- I don't want to mix politics into it
Kristian Jeremiassen is a member of the municipal council in Kommune Qeqertalik for Inuit Ataqatigiit and has previously been a member of Inatsisartut for 13 years, but was not re-elected in the last election.
American funding of Avannaata Qimussersua last year, as well as plans for the US Vice President's wife, Usha Vance, to visit the race in Sisimiut, created a lot of attention both from the press and the rest of the world.
In addition to running the tourism business, you are a member of the municipal council in the Municipality of Qeqertalik. You invited the US special envoy, Jeff Landry, who is tasked with working for Greenland to become part of the US, to Avannaata Qimussersua. Isn't that problematic?
- It is a great experience, and it is very important to show it to our fellow citizens. I don't want to mix politics into it, says Kristian Jeremiassen.
Even if you invite Jeff Landry?
- It is not about him specifically, and we have also sent offers to many others. I don't want to mix politics into our company, emphasizes Kristian Jeremiassen.
KNQK: Totally inappropriate
The dog sled association KNQK stated in a press release on Monday night that the invitation to the US special envoy to Avannaata Qimussersua is completely inappropriate.
- The board of KNQK finds it unacceptable that political pressure is exerted from outside, and therefore considers that the participation of foreign political actors in Avannaata Qimussersua is completely inappropriate, writes the chairman of KNQK, Mikkel Jeremiassen.
KNQK has issued a notice that they do not accept the invitation. What is your comment on that?
- We just want people to experience the big dog sled race. Invitation and experience are two different things. As a company, we have only advertised that it is one of those experiences, says Kristian Jeremiassen.
