A group of citizens in Nuuk will organize a demonstration on Saturday 17 January 2026 against what they describe as the USA's illegal and unacceptable plans to take over Greenland. The demonstration will take place at 1pm on Saturday and is announced as a peaceful protest.

The demonstration starts at Katerittarfik Amisut and moves from there through the city ending at Kujallerpaat, where the US Consulate in Nuuk is located. The route is very similar to the last demonstration on the same topic, which took place in March 2025.

According to the organizers, the purpose is to send a clear message that Greenland's democracy, right to self-determination and basic human rights must be respected.

One of the organizers, Bikki Jepsen, says that the Greenlandic population has been exposed to pressure for a long time, which creates insecurity and fear.

- Our politicians and elected officials have repeatedly stated that our country is not for sale - and that our country cannot simply be bought or taken over by the use of military force, she says.

Citizens give support to politicians

The organizers stress that the demonstration is not just a protest, but also a mark of support for Greenland's political and diplomatic line. Kristian Johansen, who is also among the organizers, also encourages citizens in other cities and settlements to organize similar demonstrations on the same day.

- With this demonstration, we want to show that we act, that we stand together and that we support our politicians, diplomats and business partners. Therefore, we also encourage fellow citizens in other cities and settlements to organize demonstrations on the same day, and show that our country stands together, he says.

According to the organizers, the demonstration is not only about Greenland, but about respect for international law and international law. Avijâja Rosing-Olsen points this out.

- We demand respect for our country's right to self-determination and for us as a population. We demand respect for international law and international law. This is not just our fight – it is a fight that concerns the whole world, she says.

The organizers encourage artists, cultural figures, politicians and citizens to participate in the demonstration and use their voice, among other things by sharing photos and videos from the day. At the same time, it is emphasized that the demonstration must proceed peacefully.

Racism, violence and vandalism are not accepted, and participants are encouraged to show solidarity, bring Greenlandic flags and treat each other with respect.
