France opens a consulate general in Greenland 6 February.

This is according to the French foreign minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, according to the Reuters news agency.

The announcement comes on Wednesday morning, at the same time as the crisis between Greenland and Denmark and the USA has intensified due to US President Donald Trump's repeated statements about taking Greenland into his possession for reasons of security.

- Attacking another NATO member would not make sense. It would also be against US interests. And therefore this blackmail must naturally stop, says Jean-Noël Barrot, according to Reuters.

When the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, visited Greenland this summer, he revealed plans for the opening of a consulate general in Nuuk.

It should strengthen cooperation between the countries, it was said at the time.
