The list of senators and congressmen from the USA, who are visiting Denmark at the end of this week, are now finally in place.

This is confirmed by Member of Parliament for Inuit Ataqatigiit Aaja Chemnitz, who has been responsible for planning the visit.

Cross-political delegation

The delegation will be led by Alaska Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski.

In addition to Lisa Murkowski, Senators Chris Coon (Democrat), Thom Tillis (Republican), Dick Durbin (Democrat), Jeanne Shaheen (Democrat), and Congressmen  Gregory Meeks, Madeline Dean and Sara Jacobs are participating.

Participation from Inatsisartut committee

According to the plan, the delegation must participate in a Greenland committee meeting on Friday or Saturday, where members of the Foreign Policy Council and members of Inatsisartut's Foreign and Security Policy Committee are also invited to participate.

- I would like to see the delegation also come to Nuuk, but we are also working to get the members of the Foreign and Security Policy Committee in Inatsisartut to come to Denmark and physically participate in the meeting, says Aaja Chemnitz.

Good friend of Greenland

Senator Lisa Murkowski was in Nuuk recently, where she also met with business people and politicians.

- She is a good friend of Greenland, and also a personal friend of mine. That is why I also have high hopes that she will be the one to lead the delegation. Because it is absolutely crucial that it is someone who knows about the Arctic who meets with us, says Aaja Chemnitz, who is in full swing with the actual planning of the meeting.

Senior researcher at DIIS, Ulrik Pram Gad highlights Aaja Chemnitz's role in planning the visit. - Without her long-term contact with Lisa Murkowski, it would hardly have come to anything".

Support for Greenland's sovereignty

According to a statement from Republican Senator Thom Tillis, the meeting is about showing support for Greenland's sovereignty.

Senior researcher at DIIS, Ulrik Pram Gad, tells Sermitsiaq that "besides the precise composition of the delegation - and especially that there is actually republican participation - perhaps the most important thing to note is the importance of parliamentarians being persistent in their international work: without Aaja Chemnitz's long-term contact with Lisa Murkowski, this would hardly have come to fruition".
